Little Joys in Life
There are two things I am continually harping about and that is letting you image tell a story and eliminating extraneous information. This photograph does both exceptionally well. The viewer should note that there is nothing that could be removed from this photograph without altering the story.
When looking at this composition you can almost hear the mother whispering to the child; “What is that?”, “Isn’t it pretty?”. This image gives me a feeling of intimacy between these two humans, bonded together with love and shearing, a quiet moment. This is a universal story of discovery and teaching that only a parent and child can shear.
The photo-artist has elected to use muted tones in this presentation. This gives the photograph a quiet understated feeling. The photographer could have elected to increase the saturation which would have altered the atmosphere of the scene a little.

Thank you Jim!
I keep telling myself to check and check again my settings. I should know better! I even took a course in digital white balance settings. I left my auto setting on, in my Canon D40 which leaves horrible skin colors when shooting in the shade. But wonderful skin tones other wise, so I do not alter the manual settings inside the camera, which you can do. Such as a little less blue and purple which is what is off in my camera. I found in class that everyones D40s which almost every student had, that each individual D40 cameras where a little different in colors that needed adjusting. Now I prefere to do a custom white balance, or use one of the other settings when in shade such as 5200K which for me blocks out to much blue, or one of the others such as flash, which adds more warmth. ( can be to much in some cameras) This is where Raw formate would have saved me. As you have all the info to make a much better correction on your white balance settings. I had upped the saturation too, but the colors of the skin where nor correct to my liking. I will work on the manual colors some more. Before we all left to go shoot at Balboa Lake, we were looking for something red or brighter in color for my grandson to wear. As I new his shirt would not work well. Originally on his shirt were bold white letters that said frog. But I felt it to distracting, so I cloned that out.
